The Martis Creek Dam
Solutions Initiative

The future of Martis Creek Dam poses great questions and unique opportunities to the Truckee River watershed.  Constructed in 1972, the dam backs up Martis Creek between the Truckee Airport and Waddle Ranch Preserve, creating Martis Reservoir.

According to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (the Corps), the earthen dam is unsafe and poses a catastrophic risk of failure to Reno, 35 miles downstream.  The Corps is pursuing a detailed assessment of the dam, downstream dangers, and alternative solutions, ranging from reconstruction to removal.

The Martis Creek Dam Solutions Initiative seeks to engage local communities and national expertise to craft and secure the best possible outcome for Martis Creek and the entire Truckee River watershed.

Our goal is to come up with a viable solution that both ensures the safety of Reno area residents and enhances the natural resource values of Martis Valley and the Tahoe-Truckee Region.
